5 steps to your first handicap

The Dutch route is straightforward once you know the steps.

1. Learn to play

Learn the basic shots and how to play safely and at a suitable pace.

2. Course permission

A golf professional or authorised person confirms that you are ready to play the course under the applicable conditions.

3. Golf rules exam

Show that you understand the essential rules, safety and etiquette.

4. Submit handicap scores

Play valid scores and submit them through an authorised golf club or handicap provider.

Course permission: your first step onto the course

Course permission is not the same as a handicap. It confirms that you can play safely and responsibly on the course where it is issued. Acceptance at other courses can vary.

Good to know: golf courses set their own admission requirements. Always check before booking.

The golf rules exam

You do not need to memorise the entire Rules of Golf. As a beginner, focus on safe play, pace, care of the course and the rules you encounter most often.

Safe play

Know when it is safe to hit and when to shout FORE.

Pace of play

Be ready when it is your turn and keep up with the group ahead.

Care for the course

Repair pitch marks, rake bunkers and look after the playing surface.

Essential rules

Know what to do with lost balls, penalty areas, unplayable balls and relief.

The score that gets you handicap 54

Under the Dutch NGF route, a beginner can obtain handicap 54 with a qualifying score equivalent to at least 19 Stableford points over 9 holes or 36 over 18 holes.

9 holes

19 Stableford points or more at the handicap-54 level.

18 holes

36 Stableford points or more at the handicap-54 level.

When does a round count for your handicap?

The round must meet handicap requirements. This includes playing a suitable rated course, following the Rules of Golf and having the score certified by a marker where required.

Suitable course

The course and tees need valid rating information for handicap purposes.

According to the rules

Play under the Rules of Golf and the applicable local rules.

With a marker

Your score is confirmed by an eligible marker.

Many par-3 courses too

A growing number of shorter courses can be used for handicap scores if properly rated.

What does your handicap mean?

Your Handicap Index is a measure of your demonstrated playing ability. Your Playing Handicap for a specific round depends on the course, tees and format.

Handicap 54 is the starting point for many Dutch golfers, not a finish line. Your handicap changes as you submit new valid scores.
